Have landed a metal detecting permission where an inch or two under the turf, the ground changes to hard compacted glacial gravels which makes digging with a spade a bit of a bugger.

I am therefore thinking of carrying either a mini mattock like the small Hart, or even a roofers/geologists hammer...

To carry this I was going to use a simple hammer loop, but noticed the leather carrier's you guys use tend to hold the pick at a 45 degree angle... Is there a particular reason for this??? Or won't it matter too much????

Thanks in advance,

Peter

Thanks Gents,

From what you guys are saying, I think I will get away with the geo- hammer in a loop but anything with a longer handle is best at 45 degrees...

Regards,

Peter

I started with a loop and soon noticed that it rattles, leaves everything banging against your leg and the longer the handle, the more it will not stay in that loop and make you want a 45 degree leather pick holder...
