On This Day In 2005, Google Maps was launched 🗺 - Thank heavens for Google Maps
It's another great Aussie invention:
Wikipedia: Google Maps first started as a C++ program designed by two Danish brothers, Lars and Jens Eilstrup Rasmussen, and Noel Gordon and Stephen Ma, at Sydney-based Where 2 Technologies. It was first designed to be separately downloaded by users, but the company later pitched the idea for a purely Web-based product to Google management, changing the method of distribution. In October 2004, the company was acquired by Google Inc. where it transformed into the web application Google Maps.

Also today in 1978, the famed comedian Charlie Chaplin’s coffin was stolen from its grave in a small cemetery in Lake Geneva in Switzerland. The two thieves had planned a get rich scheme and a ransom of $600,000 was asked for but not paid and they were later caught and one was sentenced to jail and the other not. The thieves wives wrote to Chaplin’s wife saying they were extremely sorryfor what their husbands had done. Chaplin’s wife replied, all is forgiven.
