The AT Gold is a good gold detector in the lesser iron mineralised areas..(.Not many of those in Australia) it is a very sensitive machine and will find very tiny bits of gold near the surface. This machine struggles in our iron mineralisation and you will be hearing plenty of ground noise. This tecta will be very noisy at the beach over the wet salt sand but will work ok over the dry sand.
You will not find a machine that can do it all as in coin, relic treasure and gold field work.
The Fisher Gold Bug Pro DP is a better machine than the Garrett AT and will perform quite well as a gold detector and it has ground balance range that will let you search from the dry sand to the water line at the beach and can handle sort of highish iron mineralisation.

If you don't want to go big and get a Minelab PI then the EQ 800 is a nice machine that will let you detect almost anywhere.
I don't envy anybody starting out metal detecting these days coz there is such a huge range of machines out there. Stick to the top name brands

For a newbie I'd recomennd a Minelab Sd2200 rather then the 21 . Not for any other reason apart from being a bit easier to master.. either way they are both good if you learn them inside out . A battery mod is also worth while with them.
