Found a few lumps of quartz that look to have small specs of gold in them. Crushed one up a bit & there does appear to be gold dust as a result. Is there a way of determining whether it is gold or mica?

Gold is usually pretty much well, gold...... a photo would help.

Most likely mica, check it out under a loupe, or decent magnifying glass .... occasionally get small pyrite crystals that can also be mistaken for gold.

Keep it aside and check it against your future finds ..... every bit of knowledge along the way helps, that also applies to what is/isn't gold.

Cheers T.

try panning it mate, if you have an idea of how to pan you will very quickly know if it's gold or not

Thanks for that, will give the panning a go. Need to do a lot more crushing though to get the quartz down to that sandy consistency. The particles are very small, I would say equivalent to the smallest in your photo. So obviously of no monetary value just interest value.
