Hey Guys,

Just wondering if anyone has any equipment recommendations for a newby looking at prospecting for both gems and gold ?

My family has some gold pans around. Just wondering if a cheap metal detector is a good idea too ?

Hey Huzee, check out the following list I posted on another topic.

  • Garrett Deluxe Panning Kit[/*]
  • 1/4" Classifier[/*]
  • Angus MacKirk Grub Steak Sluice[/*]
  • Power Step Shovel[/*]
  • 20Ltr Buckets[/*]
  • Plastic Hand Shovel[/*]
  • Gum Boots[/*]
  • Full Brim Hat[/*]
  • Sunnies[/*]

Cheap metal detectors probably wont perform to your expectations. My suggestion would be to start with the above list, have a play around in the creek and get a feel for the hobby first, that way you may be able to justify buying a more expensive detector later on which would increase your odds of finding gold. Just a thought.

For gems I would get a 1/8" and a 1/4" sieve.
as for pans I can recomend either the turbopan or garrett super sluice. There are plenty of demonstration vids on youtube for both these pans.
Regards greg
