Found this silver 3d piece in my collection, anyone any ideas?
I think it might have had the reverse scoured out and the inscription engraved in. Also, it looks as though it formed part of a bracelet, or necklace.

Looks good Bobj. I've never seen anything like that before, the key would obviously be to know what WWB stood for late in Queen Victoria's reign. And how it relates to the £500 a year.

£500 a year would have been a huge amount in those days - somebody was doing alright if they were earning that much!

Thanks mate, theonly thing I found out, was that £500 was worth $41,000 in today’s money. Even looked up the Royal Mint. might email Downies to see if they know anything.

Sounds like a plan Bobj. , let us know how you get on with it, a very interesting piece for sure.

Had a bit of a hunt very recently,

looked through some 1's&2's, came up with a few foreign coins
Screenshot_20230508-073048_Gallery.jpg
Also a N.Z 2c from 1972

And a nice N.Z 2c from 1977

Nothing Aussie that was noteworthy at all amongst that lot(funnily enough.

Also went through a fair few 5c with only a few stand out finds worth noting.

1972 5c

Lastly, a 1999 5c Reverse with a rim cud

So, a few more collectables found at cost price,.... always gotta be a boon I recon.

Great that they got back to you so quickly, and mystery solved too. I suppose you could do a search of some kind to find someone from that era of the appropriate age with those WWB initials from the region that you acquired it from. May be your best bet at finding its story out at least Bobj.

Had a squiz at every outlet I could think of to find out about WWB, but nothing came up

However, I remembered an old shoebox I have is full of coins and founa a 1976 20 cent piece that has a diecrack all the way through Elizabeth’s effigy.AE59EA08-B45B-4A51-8CB9-0D8E337B2D4E.jpeg

That's pristine hey !
I've never seen that die crack before either, pretty fine and would probably be difficult to spot on a well worn coin from nowadays.

My favourite was the incuse this time, don't often see them on a hunt.

Just a few five's once again.

Went to open this one and seen a 1972 ender

Also found this 2015 5c with the missing SD
Screenshot_20230610-073829_Gallery.jpg
It has 3 things that set it apart from a normal reverse side(echidna side)
Screenshot_20230610-074001_Gallery.jpg
Starting on the left foot, we have several points with small cuds(like spurs).... hard to see with the naked eye.
Screenshot_20230610-074235_Gallery.jpg
Then of course we have the missing SD itself, sorta harder to discern by naked eye.
Screenshot_20230610-074047_Gallery.jpg
Then we have the right foot
Screenshot_20230610-074141_Gallery.jpg
These cuds can definitely be seen easily by the naked eye, especially when compared side by side to a normal 5c reverse side of the 5c coin
Screenshot_20230610-074354_Gallery.jpg
They make the foot seem like it has a larger base to the toes themselves.
So this is definitely a coin that you could hunt for out of your change from the shops with absolutely no equipment at all.

A good hunt, but lots of dirty covid coins ( ruined from being handled with sanitised hands --- I'm putting it down to)
The good coins in the hunt being coins spent after a drawer scrounging hunt for shopping money, or the empying of the money box/stash for the same reason.
Thus there [may] sometimes be one or two exceptional coins out of a few thousand.

Here's the results.

Couple of 1972 5c, 1st one is grungy and scratched up, but the 2nd one makes up for that.

A 1974 50c worth holding on to.
Screenshot_20230701-080736_Gallery.jpg
And a stack of 2022 50c in better condition.
I could try finding them like this in five years time, but chances lessen over distance in time.

Back to the 5c.

I found 2 2019 JC 5c
These coins are getting harder and harder to find hunting these days, already as hard as finding a 1972 5c (if not harder), the only reason they are still out there now is because the 2020, 21, & 22 JC effigies look the same and make them a bigger job to look for now than when they first appeared on the scene
Screenshot_20230701-080841_Gallery.jpg

1987 N.Z 5c
I hold on to N.Z coins, just incase I decide to make up a set one day.
Screenshot_20230701-080910_Gallery.jpg
And 1974 N.Z 5c.
Screenshot_20230701-080919_Gallery.jpg
Got a few nice 5c too
(ya'd want to out of searching through 3,000 plus of em hey).

1980 5c
Screenshot_20230701-080943_Gallery.jpg
1975 5c
Screenshot_20230701-080952_Gallery.jpg
And finally a 1971 5c
Screenshot_20230701-081002_Gallery.jpg

I think the 1971 5c has to be my favourite this time.
Happy hunting.

Thought I'd best keep my hand in.

More about that 2001 in the following post.

Here's the other side of that 2001 5c

Notice anything ?

Happy about that they do not turn up, hardly ever.

Also got three 1972 5c
Screenshot_20230822-084054_Gallery.jpg
A good result I feel.
Tires the old eyes though.
Happy hunting
