    GPX6000 Faults/Issues

Further to the description of my experience with my 6000 above, I rang Minelab to firstly work out if I needed the speaker up grade and also told them about the problems I described. They said it didn't sound right and suggested I send the coil as well. So I sent the box, coil and battery last...

    old handle

I have been messing around with my new Nokta pulsedive with 8" coil and found this handle in the ocean. Was a real mystery when I found it with an incredible amount of build up of whatever you call that corrosion product. Turned out to be some sort of iron handle (which I had guessed it might...

    GPX6000 Faults/Issues

I have been reading through these posts and thought I'd jot down my experience so far for anyone interested. I've done 2.5 seasons now with my 6000 so that's over a year full time both pushing and general prospecting and I am still using the original coil and battery but both are going to be...

    Minelab FT 16000 gold detector

Thanks Deano, yes I used new batteries and did a rudimentary clean but will give the electrical contacts a good clean as suggested, and never thought of checking for metal under the coli cover!. With a bit of luck I might be able to get hold of a good GT16000 coil to help isolate the fault.

    Minelab FT 16000 gold detector

I just tried to fire up an old FT16000 that I was given years ago and no go. About 10 seconds after turning it on you get loud threshold sound that can only be adjusted with the volume, up until then it is silent. Nothing else changes it and even unplugging the coil makes no difference. I...

    DIY 3 tray dry blower

Ok, thanks I'm not familiar with that setup, keen to see how it pans out. FYI I use an old Gold Wizard dry blower. It's over 40 years old I guess and it has the riffle tray set up as I described. There's a photo and description of it at post 49 of the thread you mention in your reply above...

    DIY 3 tray dry blower

Great work mate, looks the part. But I can't work out what you are doing with all the holes in the riffle tray? If the wooden square sections are your riffles then there should be a dead air space on the up side of the riffle and the rest open. Mine is about 10mm but kit is a smaller dry blower...

Selling gold - how, why, where

Here's an example. I just processed some old sands and got 35 grams of 'gold', the majority being <60 microns. I cleaned it up as best I could within reason but it still had fine black sands in it. I would never send that off like that for the reasons mentioned previously, although I recall that...

Selling gold - how, why, where

Hi Zedman, Happy New Year to you too. I always melt my gold before sending it off got PMR. Mostly dollied species and ratty nuggets. I keep the nice ones and will sell nice pendant pieces at a premium when the opportunity arises. Grubstake questioned why I would bother to melt. The reason is...

    Aurora Australis

It's going to be interesting to see how much EMI gets generated from a detecting perspective... Can't be good. Back in the day some detectors like the Garrett A2B were practically unusable at times of high sunspot activity. Unlike the more modern detectors, there was no way to tune it out.

    red back and new dolly

Thanks for digging out the photos Dave, I can see what you have done now. I've been thinking of using an old tow ball cut in half as the bashing end, with a water pipe joiner between the threaded end and the chisel. Just a thought I had while waiting to get new tyres fitted. Might have to...

Thanks Dave, I'll give that a go for sure. And the Hebel block as well. Cheers

    Landcruiser aircon

Just wondering if there are any auto refrigeration mechanics out there who could give me some advice? I've got a 76 series Landcruiser and the aircon is playing up. The compressor pumps and cools efficiently and has a full charge of refrigerant. But when ambient conditions get hot, it seems...

    red back and new dolly

Very nice furnace Dave, I made out a couple of old firebricks from a pottery kiln but not as good as yours, and my burners have stopped working for some reason... they light up then slowly die out and won't start again. I've been using a mate's oxy to make bars to sell to the mint but I hear the...

    red back and new dolly

Yeah Dave, I saw what you made and I'm envious! It's what I really need but this will have to do for the minute. Cheers

    red back and new dolly

I've got a lot of specimen sands in a poverty pot that I have collected over the last 40 odd years. Given the gold price I thought it might be worth the effort, so I decided to make a blue bowl to see how they worked and if so whether it would be good for processing the sands. I made this out of...

    ⭐ Gold Detecting Show'n Tell

Hippyty, not sure what you mean by the wet weight. If you suspended the specie from the scales so it was fully submerged but not touching the container and that was the 'wet weight' you report then, with the equation I use (for species in quartz), it would have about 152g gold in it. If you...

Having a go at fixing stuff...

Lonewolf, instead of buying a new unit with 6 sensors you should consider buying another of the same unit for more flexibility. I did after Simmo pointed them out and now have both units on the dash when towing. One unit with four sensors for the tow vehicle and the other unit with either two or...

Having a go at fixing stuff...

Not really fixing something that broke but I am about to head off for the season and decided to address a few things that were giving me the poops last year before I go. Here's something that you might find useful. I use my camp oven as an oven, cooking in a baking dish or foil tray sitting on a...
