    Whats cooking in the workshop?

Hi Pete Looks good. Tried my latest highbanker out at Beechworth and was pleased with the first run though I will make a few a few mods to suit the fine gold. What I found was that the riffles jammed making cleaning difficult but tried placing a piece of Bunnings miners Moss at the top of the...

    Whats cooking in the workshop?

Thanks Ken, I'm glad I asked as I was about to try building another riffle. My sluice has spread slightly and the bend is not as sharp as I would like which is possibly the cause of my problem. Maybe if I fill the gap with a felt gasket? Another thought is to do away with the solid riffle and...

    Whats cooking in the workshop?

Hi all, I have a question re riffle bars. I have been making mine out of aluminium and have sort of mastered welding with propane torch (sort of). Tried/tested a couple of highbankers in the back yard and happy with them untill its time to pull them apart which is very difficult with small...

    Today I MADE

Today (actually yesterday) started another project - a mini high banker using 1.6mm aluminium. Only 6" wide and 18" long. Trying to weld 1.6mm aluminium with lpg torch and fluxless rod but cannot get sufficient heat. Tested on .5mm sheet and melted it - too hot. Any ideas Bob

    Whats cooking in the workshop?

Wishfull, Have been experimenting with a wood lathe using any timber i could find including an old desk leg which was pretty old. Some picks are light weight with short handles and also looking at a 90cm more rugged one. Have not seen a commercial version to compare but enjoy turning and...

    Whats cooking in the workshop?

Silver What you can see is an endcap which is opened out to receive the 90 deg bend. May add a gasket if splash back is a problem, same goes for centre shaft where it passes through the bend. Will need to classify to under 2" to avoid blockages Will take more pics when up and running (maybe a...

    Whats cooking in the workshop?

This is what happens when you cannot get away. Project BLUEBOWL One 50c bluebowl. From recycle shop at tip, I think it was an air fryer pan in a former life. Appears to work but further testing/tuning to be done. Project FOSSICKING PICK Many and varied. (Help I can't stop). Remains to be...

How and where to sample a placer deposit

As I said I am inexperienced but I would be looking for exposed bedrock which you can trace back into a bank for example or fault lines and crevices which would trap gold. Worn rocks above the bedrock would indicate you are actually on a watercourse. Regarding my virgin ground intentions, I plan...

How and where to sample a placer deposit

Hi Like this and will follow with interest. Your 2nd pic shows some loose gravel at the bottom which if you can remove and inspect the bedrock may give a clue. Saw a vid where anything stuck to the bedrock was scrapped and collected for panning on the basis that gold will sink untill it can go...

    Today I BOUGHT

Back to Bunnings to buy ribbed matting and blue (claytons Moss?) mat. Blue mat was listed at $39.90 per m "Clearance Special" . Salesperson stated they will not be getting any more ? so I got a bit extra. If anyones is in the middle of a project and were relying on this source they had better...

    Today I MADE

Today I have just tested my sheet metal brake and I am extremely happy. (still needs painting). I can now start on a sluice and finish the tromel and head back to Reedy Creek. Unfortuneately still a bit to do but then that half the fun. Regarding the bender it has taken 2 days from ideas gleaned...

    The New Build.

Hi, I'm going through a similar process using 6" pvc pipe with holes drilled instead of mesh using 2 different size holes and a seperate sluice for possible gems. Have converted a Bunnings water trap as a feed hopper (cheap and easy)and plan a single spray outlet to pound the gravel. All...

Hi from Wagga Wagga (NSW not WA)

Thanks all for the welcome. Philthy, just quickly read your posts and see you are well into it and now living close by. Too hot for me at the moment but am planning to chase the alluvial for a while until I get to nugget country. Have started building a midget (6") trommell/highbanker which I'll...

Hi from Wagga Wagga (NSW not WA)

Recently joined PA and have been sitting on the side searching various topics. I purchased an Exterra705 as it could recognise a .25gram (Ebay) nugget which the Compass could not and realise now that the purchase is only the start of a long learning curve. No nuggets near Wagga but managed to...
