No I know, for sure, and I have done this... really enjoyed the meet up last year too...

Where are people at this Spring? Any hot spots? :)

Seems people are super cagey or just staying out of the rain haha

Where are people at this Spring? Any hot spots? :)

Yes I know you won't want to tell me and that is ok. I was just thinking of easing back into it in the greater Dunolly to Inglewood area for a few days... :) I'm not a complete beginner just haven't been around here for a bit!

    Small scale mine make money?

I'm afraid I'm going to stay a little bit anonymous on here regarding who I work for. You can get a PL with consent from the EL owner or after 2 years of the EL... so theoretically the trick would be to establish good relations with the EL owner... A lot can be achieved just through negotiation...

    Series on identifying minerals

Well even the low grade is "Ore" hahaha I'm not a mining geologist by background, I'm exploration - we're interested in things that make the line go up

What Is/Was Pipeclay And How Is It Formed?

Regards Jaros' strange intervention. To remove threads where Goldierocks has contributed such knowledge and experience would be criminal. Don't like it, don't have to read it. It's not wasting anyone's time. I made my small contribution on the grounds that if you're into gold you might also be...

    Series on identifying minerals

Great thread this. Although as an economic geologist I must point out there are only 2 types of minerals - Ore and Waste. :P

What Is/Was Pipeclay And How Is It Formed?

Yeah a lot of these old terms only survive because, especially in places like Victoria where no substantial exploration took place for nearly 100 years, the only literature is OLD. Plus the newer geological papers are in 'modern geology speak' i.e. post-plate-tectonics. So there's a real...

    Small scale mine make money?

If you're in Victoria, note that you can't get a prospecting licence (which allows for the sort of small scale mining you're talking about) over an area that already has an exploration licence (or application) or mining licence on it. So you need to check if where you're currently prospecting (I...

What Is/Was Pipeclay And How Is It Formed?

Don't ask me! There's a saying about geologists - get 6 of them in a room together and you'll get 7 opinions.

What Is/Was Pipeclay And How Is It Formed?

If you google "sedimentary rock cycle" and look at the images, you will quickly discover that geologists are really bad at doing diagrams. This one I found, however, is almost useful: The main thing to note is that clay, shale and slate are all of the same "family", with slate being the...

    Victoria information and questions

It's understandable to think of asking a forum like this for tips... in nearly ANY OTHER PASTIME it's considered fine to asks for tips. It is definitely a quirk of gold prospecting the level of caginess, but there's plenty of history there and, after all, gold is literally money, so no wonder...

What Is/Was Pipeclay And How Is It Formed?

Add this to the list of confusing historic terms that actually make less sense to the geologists among us (guilty) than to normal, sensible folk with better things to worry about. Whenever I see references to "pipeclay" my mind just shuts down and stops working (if it was working to begin with...

    Took the Plunge on GPX5000

Lashed out on a 2nd hand GPX5000 today, still has a couple years warranty. Just could not stomach the price of the 6000 (or woe betide, the GPZ). Hopefully I'll have some fun! Once I learn the bloody thing!!

    Learning bushcraft/ trekking/ gps

You probably have come to the right place... plenty of us here would know a bit about all those things. As for navigation, which is a potentially life-saving skill, apart from learning how to determine north from the sun's position and south from the stars at night, the next step is to learn...
