NSW a Minefield of Rules Simplified (hopefully).

Been away for a few years, just had a look at the fossicking guidelines the other night and looks like it has all gone to hell 😓

top layer of alluvial gold - Oallen Ford

Nice sized bit for out that way. I found that whilst some bigger bits can be found a bit deeper, it is easier to just work the top layer, the gold is finer but there is more of it. Test areas before you commit to digging as 5-10 meters in one direction can make a huge difference to what sort...

    ⭐ Gemstone & Mineral Show n Tell

Nice find. Give it a scratch with your fingernail, if its mica there will be a mark. kyanite is a bit harder and should not mark from a fingernail. But i think you may have found what you were after.

    Tumbling question

Do you let your rocks dry between stages? I find this helps to get an idea of where they are at and if they need any more time before moving on. The only other thing i could add to what LoneWolf said, is don't add grit mid cycle. This can also lead to dull stones or scratches.

    Araluen/Tarana amethyst?

If you don't mind me asking what sort of quality are you after? I know a couple of spots closer that have shown the occasional piece, but its not guaranteed to find and not great quality. Shoot me a PM if you want any more info. If you are after some for cabbing or tumbling, i know someone who...

    Crystal cleaning ?

As Heatho said Oxalic acid does a great job on iron stained quartz. Here is a good link on cleaning minerals: http://www.johnbetts-fineminerals.com/jhbnyc/articles/minclean.htm

    Meteorite Regulations?

The testing authenticates the rock as meteorite, this gives value to what was just a suspected meteorite and still had the chance of being a meteorwrong and worthless rock. It is a lot easier to authenticate a gold nugget without having to cut a slice using hardness and SG.

    What is this stone

The second photo does look like quartz, but the first photo almost looks like there is cleavage which would make me think calcite. Is the white part soft, can it be scratched with a penknife or does the knife leave a mark on the rock?

WARNING TO FOSSICKERS ABOUT NSW SLUICING DEVELOPMENTS

The no excavation permitted refers to land under native title only. Don't get me wrong we will probably get to that stage the way we are going, but as it stands, so long as the area is not under native title feel free to excavate and backfill :Y:

WARNING TO FOSSICKERS ABOUT NSW SLUICING DEVELOPMENTS

So we are looking for reasons to allow highbankers rather than get them banned, how about this. Highbankers should cause less siltation to waterways than sluices or panning, as generally highbankers are used (as Jemba said) to get the water to the dirt rather than the dirt to the water. At...

WARNING TO FOSSICKERS ABOUT NSW SLUICING DEVELOPMENTS

What has changed since 2010? When i first started this hobby, there was uncertainty on the wording of the rules. People were asked to band together to get something done about it. But beside a few individuals here and there looking into things, not much was done. The closest i ever saw was the...

WARNING TO FOSSICKERS ABOUT NSW SLUICING DEVELOPMENTS

I will start worrying when my petrol pump can start processing something other than water or they change the wording of the rules. Otherwise they still have no leg to stand on.

    Sneaky Gems.

I was looking to upgrade my ultratec to a keyed dop, but heard about a few problems similar to this. Hope you manage to get it worked out.

Blueish rock what is it ?

Hardness test, streak test and specific gravity test will give you a lot better idea of what it is.

Blueish rock what is it ?

The only time you should be using acid to clean rocks is when you know what it is and what you want to clean away. I use oxalic acid to remove iron staining from quartz crystals, but as lonewolf said not good on metallic minerals. Give them a good soak, then warm soapy water and a good stiff...

    Prospect for Bitcoins

I am sorry but if i was looking to invest money into something, i would not be trusting a 2 year old youtube video to make me feel safe about my investment. Like it or not bitcoin is a high risk investment and can (and has) go south at any time. Not saying it will, but it can. Same as any high...
