top layer of alluvial gold - Oallen Ford

Was out at Oallen (Shoalhaven River) Ford a few months ago. The top 5cm under the scree still had a dark, almost muddy tinge. All the fine gold was in this. Going deeper only a: took effort, b: was sandy red, c: had b@gger all gold in it. Good bloke Dan who was working along side reminded me...

Australian state by state known Gold bearing areas

Will give Bingara a go this weekend. Finally out of the rat race!

    Oallen Ford

Well, I went out anyway and sure enough the river was as high as logic (and 7.62) said it would be. Nevertheless I jagged a picker (honestly the biggest I have had from Oallen) and few decent colors from a few hours over the higher rocks. Makes me keen to check out the river once the water goes...

    Oallen Ford

Thanks for your post. It made me double check the BoM river info. The sudden drop in reported level might be due to a fault....can't see how else the level could drop so much. Maybe will head out next weekend!

    Oallen Ford

Going to check out Oallen tomorrow. River peaked at Hillview nearby at just under 6m, likely some environmental flows during the week but it looks like that is now done and it back down to 30cm or so. Plenty of room for everyone.... ;)

    Ophir etc

Thanks for the directions and advice - I have had the fossicking license each year for the past three years, but rarely get anywhere it is required. Don't want to rush things!

    Ophir etc

Hi, Taking the family to see Dubbo zoo during the week and got 'permission' to take the family panning/sluicing on the way home to Sydney. I have always wanted to see Ophir but wondering if anyone has tips for somewhere around Ophir or Orange? Only want colour, not fussed if we can't pick it up...

Oallen Ford NSW Information and Questions

River was too high to get into the holes I wanted to try, didn't check the nut on my yabby pump and third test in a boil hole saw flanges go rushing down the river! Damn it! Novice error not checking the tightness of the nut. Oh well, it will probably still be there in the hole when the water...

Oallen Ford NSW Information and Questions

Hi all, I have been out and about a few more times (always within children walking distance of main roads) and tried Stewart's Crossing as well (found an 'almost' picker near the edge of someone's workings about 50cm below the surface, just got it between the finger tips! woo hoo). Will head...

Oallen Ford NSW Information and Questions

Thanks for the advice on equipment - I didn't know about the current ban, but easy not to get it wrong if you don't have one. I do have a river sluice, but I use the pan to catch the fines when I classify and then just pass it through the sluice. Always great to get to the end of the day and see...

Oallen Ford NSW Information and Questions

Cheers, that matches my experience. You think you're on to a good lead then the pans get light on... I will have to get a high bank set up so I stop carrying buckets of gravel to the river! I tried going to bedrock in a few spots but no results. Thanks.

Oallen Ford NSW Information and Questions

Off to Oallen this weekend, found a few likely spots but wondering if it is worth going all the way through the gravel to check the bedrock? Thoughts?

    intro - Golden Rivett

G'day all, Scott from Sydney, aka Golden Rivett. Slowly getting into panning and sluicing but have only tried a few spots in Essington State Forrest and Oallen Ford. It's great to get the kids away from tv, and a little bit of gold each time will one day get turned into their jewellery (may take...
