Looks like processionary caterpillars, to me. They often march along in single file, nose to tail and if they're on a branch above you and you disturb them, they drop acidic ooze that burns your eyes. Unfriendly little beasties.

yep ...spitfires we call em.... dont touch them....make you itch,,,,they are a big grub which form into a wasp @ a quarter of the size they were.....
....if you see a big line of them...like a hundred or so....yep seen it....on concrete....push the lead one slowly onto the tail of the last one .....
....lol....they will do circles following each other.... lol.... BUT ...dont be cruel ...after your amusement push one to the side n off they go.....
....I have seen a green saw fly once...iridescent.... stunning....

Had these in our garden at Drouin and killed one and nearly killed some of the young trees we planted. I learned from experience how foul smelling they can be. Part of ecology I suppose but not my favourite part.

stunning little things.....but I have cheated...this is 3 yrs ago.....
heading towards the olgas...for the 2nd time I was there
...first time i was wondering bout all the funny dark things on the road....
2nd trip I decided to stop n have a look....a heap of em on the road....??? so I moved 6 or so off to the left of the road....
....nope....they all wanted to go to the right...so picked em up n put em over there,,,,LOL....
bucket list thing for me....wanted to see one since i was 15....im now on the wrong side of 60....

each year Thrush's nest in my shed. Well, I walked in the shed one day to find a bloody brown snake making a hasty exit with one of the chicks in its gob.

I thought I would start a thread where we can show pics of native animals that we might see when out in the field, detecting, panning, fossicking etc. Occasionally I come across something that stops me in my tracks, and I have to put the detector down and get my old flip phone out and take a photo if I'm quick enough.

I'll start with this lizard that I saw today in Kingower Vic. Not sure if it's a Shingle Back, Maybe Nightjar will know. Anyway, he wasn't in any hurry to be anywhere and was happy to oblige while I hunted around in my back pocket for my phone.

I didn't find any gold, but this little guy put a smile on my face :)
