didn't anyone know how to count back then, it says...

1834-10-28 The Battle of Pinjarra occurs in the Swan River Colony in present-day Pinjarra, Western Australia. Between 14 and 40 Aborigines are killed by British colonists.

between 14 and 40? so they haven't got a clue?....... if the truth came out it was probably more like 100's. :awful:
With a lot of such conflicts with indigenous people, the lower figure is the official one and the higher figure the one from indigenous verbal history. So instead of being a completely unknown number, one can assume them to be lower and upper limits on possibilities.

One needs to be careful about motivations, etc. Indigenous people did not like having their land taken, waterholes poluuted by cattle etc. so were not necessarily passive. However one of the horrible things is that in retaliative punitive raids, often no distinction was made between participants in the actions being retaliated against, or between men, women and children. "The attack at Pinjarra is considered to have been in response to sustained aggression by the Binjarebs, including robberies and murder of settlers and members of other Nyungar tribes".

The past is past and what is acceptable changes - we used to hang our white children in those days....age of criminal responsibility was 7, and we hung kids as young as that (mostly only older than 12 in the 1800s). Slavery was only abolished in Britain in 1833.
