Good looking PI detector, looks easy to set up and use, excellent battery capacity.
Pre-orders not available from Garrett Australia. ?
If it had been I would have ordered one. !
Pre-orders from one US dealer $3995.00

Your phone doesn't have a removable battery anymore does it? That's because it's actually a very good idea - reduces weight, reduces contact wear and tear and allows more room in the case for a bigger battery. Plus, recharging is via a standard USB plug and pocket power pack can run the machine if the onboard battery is low.

Plus around and on the salt lakes.
A funny statement in the manual says to try other modes on inland salt lakes first.
Salt mode appears more for wet beach detecting?

Garrett Axiom manual pg12:
SALT Mode Designed for use in mineralized areas with wet salt content, primarily for wet saltwater beaches. SALT Mode may also be useful for dry inland salt lakes and goldfields with high salt concentration, depending on moisture content. But it is recommended to first try the other modes for these inland conditions.

Garrett Axiom manual pg12:
Wonder if they think that other modes handle ground so well that salt mode is not nessasary, and would reduce depth?

Just found this on another forum.

Seems it does handle hot WA ground.

Told by the local Garrett supplier yesterday it’s about a month away. Told him I been trying to sell my 2 ATX’s didn’t even offer to trade them.
Unfortunately for Garrett, prospector experiences here in Oz with their earlier PI detectors are going to prove something of a handicap for the Axiom, even if it is (at last) the real deal.

Back in the 80's, Garrett owned the Australian prospector market with their ADS Deepseeker and Groundhog VLF models, which were clunky but effective, and tough as nails. Sadly, they never seemed to have much interest in this market after that or much of a prospecting focus either and once Minelab became a thing, they soon ate Garrett's lunch.

The ATX was said to be an Infinium in digital clothing, so if the Axiom is just an updated 'more of the same', it will struggle in Australia. Those of us who did OK with those old Deepseekers and Groundhogs, still remember them fondly, but the 'good old days' were a long time ago now and Garrett have got a steep slope to climb, if they're to be king of the mountain again.

Not much customisation on audio - hearing impaired has to look at the screen :(. On a very deep target (other brands) usually display no information on the screen and yet faint flutter can still be heard in threshold. Would be nice if the background threshold could be changed to a low, mid or higher tone pitch for more customisation. I doubt I would get one as its not friendly to my hearing.

Pity the shaft is carbon fibre. No more detecting during dry summer thunderstorms.

I think that Garrett has used some technology and patents from White’s. I’d give it a chance before trashing it.I bet Minelab wanted to get their hands on some of White’s patents too. Happy hunting everyone.

Those rumoured Whites patents are certainly a part of what makes the Axiom so interesting, but I doubt that Minelab were interested in acquiring them, as they've been such a distance in front of their US competitors for so long.

I don't think anybody here is "trashing" the Axiom yet, but there's certainly plenty of scepticism and for good reason: Garrett are known for their previous unfulfilled claims about new models. I'm pretty sure all of us will be very interested to see how the Axiom is priced here in Australia and most importantly, how it actually performs out in the field, which is where the rubber really meets the road.

Looks well balanced, shaft is nice, and seems to have a good feature set, and finally sounds like a PI. Price & performance is going to be the key factors on whether this is a success or not. If the price is up there, then it better perform. $4995 USD converted to AUD, add GST is getting into GPX6000 price territory. Remember the Whites SPP? They weren't the greatest, but when the Aus dollar was stronger than the US, and they were selling for around $1200 bucks from memory, I bet they sold quite a few of them.

There still are phones with removeable batteries. If it was up to me, mine still would have one. It reduces a lot of e waste in the end. It was phased out due so they could make more money, like most things.
Contact wear and tear? I don't think that is an issue personally. It never has been with my other detectors, or power tools. I know you can plug a power pack in, but that doesn't negate the fact that it would of been nice to have a removeable battery.
I also understand that it is probably not hard to replace the internal one if it happens to die, but still. Not hating, I just thought it was a dumb idea, considering everything else seemed ok.
