Hi all, wanting to gather some information about Gloucester area like best locations to search or maps that people may have. Also any camping places near these areas. Chasing saffire/ruby. Alot of mixed info out there so looking for some actual proven information. Anything would be greatly helpful :)

See if you can track down a copy of "Geology of Barrington Tops Plateau" by Lin Sutherland and Ian Graham, published by The Australian Museum Society 2003. It mentions the gemstones found at Gummi Flats in the Barrington Plateau. However, if my memory serves me correct, Gummi Flats is in a Phytophthora Quarantine zone, in a National Park.

Hi Lukusbeau and welcome to PA.

Generally, people don't give away proven locations where they find sapphires, and do a lot of research to find their spots.

Try Google - search "Gloucester NSW SAPPHIRES" and it will come up with maps and info for you. Same with camping spots. Google is your friend!

Some people will says that prospecting/fossicking is 70% research and 30% searching.
There's research work to do before you find and select YOUR spots to try, before heading out, mate.

That's the best bit, in my opinion - finding your own lucky spot, that no one else knows about and having it all to yourself! :)

Best of luck!

Cheers,
Megsy

You are going to find that the trek in is not easy, a bit more like a tramp and climb into deep gullies rather than a walk. You can drive to a Park hut but after that it is a walk for a few hours, a quick dig and wash then head back out before dark. The native rats in the hut keep you awake all night by running over your head.

There is an easier place in the pine plantation near Hanging Rock, Nundle and all you need is a shovel and a dry shaker.

Thanks everyone.
I was more chasing a nice area that allows camping, not specific locations. I'm not pro, it's just a little fun.

It would be heaven if it was that easy, but then it would only be "a little fun" and not half the excitement, at the end of the day. Try this search - fossicking nsw locations

As Pat Hogan said: "There is an easier place in the pine plantation near Hanging Rock, Nundle and all you need is a shovel and a dry shaker." There are a number of good camping options around Nundle.

Hi,
Not sure how you are going on your search? would be keen to catch up, apparently i can't PM yet being new on the forum, but i am also keen to chase semi precious/gold around that area as well.

p.s have a place that you could camp on located in Bowman.

Hi, wow, it's been a while since dropping in. Covid huh. Well i certainly have had plenty of time to explore now, 1 or 2 semi precious stones found, very small, garnet and saphire. But no gold as yet, a lot of veins of quartz, and i know there is gold nearby (45min drive) but have not done a lot of panning around tbh.
