Went for a drive today out to Grass Gully near Yalwal to have a look around some of the old timers mines. Have lived in the area for 51 years and up until today never really went out just to look.

All the gold from this area is reported to come from rock crushing and there are a lot of diggings and test areas, amazes me to see where they did dig, guessing they must have done a lot of loaming before they decided to dig.

Anyway I found a few areas and items that I didn't even know existed in the area

This picture of a lone rock that was gravel within a bed of clay, just sitting above one of the diggings on top of a hill, on its own

Down a small track and it lead to what I think might have been the home of the crusher, the steel has long gone

Further down towards the creek there is a little dam wall and judging by the size of rock used it would fit the era of gold mining in the area

Still signs of old steel tubing laying around, but Mother Earth is slowly claiming it all back. To think I use to ride motorbikes pass this area every weekend (30 years ago) and didn't know all this history was only a few meters off the track.

Beautiful pics
I used to love exploring the mines at Yalwal and grassy gully when i was younger. Yalwal was the first spot i wanted to try some fossickung till i found out it was now NP
I have still had a potter round some of the state forest but with no luck so far

that reminds me i have to get Nat Park maps imported into my mapping app somehow.

dont want to stray in to one by mistake . those kind of bruises dont wash out with Sard wonder soap.

how was week end in yahwal

we went Wednesday and have seen tips more attractive. was informed that bikes and fwd's move in on weekends so we scarpered thurs for more peaceful spots, wog wog and worri...nice

I have spent quiet a few hours walking around Yalwal, have never camped there though....
If you are interested in the old mines it is quiet an interesting place, lots of adits about and the open cut pit, a few bits and pieces from the old mining days can be found laying round still. The place is all national park now days, so most of it is no go for prospecting unfortunately.

yeah i have been going to yalwal for around 20yrs now, first as a kid now as an adult and it has changed alot, was nice could 4x4 all through there or camp where ever you liked now it is locked up so much and there is crap everywhere, when i am there i usually go and sit where the very first gold was found in yalwal and enjoy knowing that many a man has dreamed of his fortune to be right where i am, i havent gone to the open cut or the shafts/adits in so long now

great spot but yes , all closed now except for some areas left for ferals . we are too old for a lot of walking, went to cemetery but rest is for walkers. road in was deep rutted so caravan got a bit of a workout, as was road to wog wog, very quiet there. ended up in warri reserve for a bit of panning but water too cold yet for us. was told that a chap with a sluice got about $500 for about 3 days play. nice. Now as for yalwal, there was a scheduled week end for some detecting, fossicking and as we left for better locations (for us ) would like feedback on same ...that's all...ps thanks for pics, will download Jamie...

Has any had any lucky at yalwal just out of Nowra
I've heard some story people getting kicked out and some having luck

Just wondering it's with it before I waste my time

Thanks

Sorry, I do not know much about that area as well.
About the only thing I know is most of the good ground is under water from a Dam
that was built there.

Not a great place for prospecting unfortunately as the majority of the gold field is under national parks
It is a very interesting place to have a look at still, with a few relics from the old days still laying around here and there. There are mine shafts that can be explored with a torch and hard hat when its dry, as well as the open cut mine and old stamper if the water is down.

I've been to yalwal heaps of time just not to look for gold.

Not sure what the national park is.
Is it the camp grounds and the other side of the dam and how far up the creek does it go before going into state land
