    ha... yeh I ate quite a bit of it thinking it was fossilized mustard but nope. Definately uranium :D great tip on specular reflection thanks - wish I'd known that! Hopefully I'll make it back up there eventually with a metal detector

    hi, I found a patch of highly mineralised shist in a glacial moraine in NZ. I was wondering if this was anything other than oxidised iron... its got some interesting colours. Sadly its a plane ride and a 25km walk to investigate further :)

    yup, a coin scratches it... ok mineral identified I reckon, thanks! Now all I have to do is to forge myself a molybdenum titanium pickaxe and dig my way down to the gold :D

    hmm this would be more like can be easily scratched with an actual nail. its brittle and can be snapped easily and tends to fracture into layers. the mineral itself Id say would have a density somewhat less than pyrite, but the nugget I ended up with was extremely light... like aluminum (but...

    Hi all, I found a stretch of quartz veins in a major faultline in greywacke bedrock (exposed after a big flood). One of the veins is large, about 1m thick in places and pretty much pure white.
