ABC article. Nice read - Gold prospecting in the outback not for the faint-hearted

PLB and Inmarsat satphone for me. Looked at the InReach and Zoleo devices too but two drawbacks for my use (mainly hiking) - subscription is expensive and need to be tethered to a phone. InReach mini has some fiddly two way coms. Without the phone, no better than a PLB which doesn’t have...

    home wind turbine advice

A few things about wind energy: The energy you can extract from moving air is related to the swept area of the blades. Big/long blades or blades that spin fast. First is impractical unless in a fixed location and the second results in noise and rapid wear of components. Turbulent airflow has...

    cub camper

Lots of Cub owners on myswag.org so it's worth asking on that forum even if there isn't one for sale right now. Someone may know someone selling. ExplorOz is another forum that has a classifieds section.

    GPX 4000 vs 4500

I just went through a similar exercise and ended up with a 4000. For $3000 it was far better value than all bar one 4500 that I'd seen since the beginning of the year. Came with a CC Pick, a Nugget Finder 17x11 mono (pre-Advantage series) and an S upper shaft (very comfortable). The 4500 is a...

    Today I BOUGHT

Yesterday I bought a GPX4000. Had a quick swing on the way home near Heathcote (a .22 casing only came up but seems to be working very nicely). Came with an 11" DD, 17" NF mono, speaker, harness with Camelbak cleverly integrated and an s-shaped upper shaft. Got a CC Pick as part of the...

How to spot a fake Minelab GPX 5000

The transaction is occurring in Australia therefore our IP laws apply. He only claims that the control box is fake and the rest is real. I doubt the coils would be real as they're being used on a VLF machine. Wouldn't be well matched I reckon if they were real.

That's clever using the angle that way. Thanks for posting. Look forward to more pics.

How to spot a fake Minelab GPX 5000

We're probably competing for the same ones as I've narrowed my search to a 4000 as well :) I've looked on every forum and blog but haven't found any references to fakes. The main problem will be stolen units. I may have already come across one of these from the UK. Serial numbers of 4000s...

    12v power outlet

I use these ones: http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=PS2092 The plugs on whatever you're plugging in will need to be changed to match. A normal cigarette plug/socket can't handle 15A

Victoria - Updated search engine and data

There have been some recent additions to the geological data that's available on the Vic Govt website. The search engine works well. Lots of historical maps have been scanned. http://geology.data.vic.gov.au/searchAssistant As an example, I searched for Dunolly and this is a map that is...

How to spot a fake Minelab GPX 5000

I actually bought my X-terra 305 from Peter before the Wedderburn token hunt. He did say he was putting his Extreme up as his collection needed culling. Nenad from Minelab set the 305 up at Wedderburn so I know that's real at least :)

    Planned burns in Victoria

With all the smoke hanging around Melbourne today, it reminded me that DEPI (the new DSE) has all of the planned burns detailed on the department's website - http://www.depi.vic.gov.au/fire-and-emergencies/planned-burns The Fire Operations Plan (FOP) link on the page has details of the future...

How to spot a fake Minelab GPX 5000

Before the first Gumtree ad got pulled, I took some screenshots so we can build up a gallery of fakes. Compare these to the original and the other fake version in the Gold City Detecting link in mbasko's first post. Also there's a space in World' s on the side. Notice on the box that there's...
