Imagine observing what it would be like setting fire to 100 liters of petrol and stuffing that much power into a battery.
The battery would have to be 4 or 5 times the size of the ones that are on offer.

Try and charge that one overnight.😆
😆

If a person had enough space in the yard they could charge their car with solar if their daily commute is faily short where they could get a week of traveling to and from work and charge it on the weekend, but I can't see it working for people who travel 20 ks+ each way to and from work.
An average full charge can get you around 400 km, so 80 km per day during the working week without recharging (although that would be the absolute limit). But if you have a charger you only have to plug it in when you come home each night - since you will only have driven a short distance it will only require a short charge. It switches itself off once charged. So perhaps an hour - I don't see that as a problem in itself.

That would be like 1000 KwH compared with the best EV such as 2022 GMC Hummer EV pickup, which is 200 KwH, which would be 560 km range. If you started with a full charge you would have to charge twice more to get from Melbourne to Sydney, which would add a couple of hours to your trip. The major problem - long trips - especially in remote areas. Pretty useless.

The diesel and petrol is the lesser of the 2 evils, It's the cost of Natural Gas / Propane which is hurting the people, At the moment it is between 6 and 8*c and people can't afford heating, And it is -7*c up North and it hasn't even started to get cold yet, and It is BP and Shell and a few other who the North Sea Gas Rigs so the people have to pay what ever they say with not competition,

People over here haven't got a clue about making a backup plan so a lot of them are going to die as they did during the Beast from the East Storm, and last Winter people were without power for 4 or 5 weeks

And Today Interest rates have now reach the highest rates since records began,
Shell and BP cannot charge more than other suppliers, so they can't really hold people to ransom. Only 45% of UK gas comes from its North Sea and Irish Sea, 33% is from Norway and 22% from Russia, Belgium and the Netherlands (some from Asia and USA at times). Which is why the price has shot up - places like Germany have had their huge Russian supply cut off, so are competing with the UK for gas from those other localities.

Yeah I use to buy those .227g cans by the case of 28 cans for around 20/£21.00 now they are £38.95 for 24 or £47.95 for 28 cans, And those little 465g / 1Lb Coleman bottle are over $87.00 for 2, yet I can buy a 11kg Bottle for around £38.00, Even the little Heaters that use those .227g cans were £19.95 when I bought them and now some places are charging over £117.95 for them, any thing to do with heating has gone nuts, I am alright coz I've been stock pileing Propane and Butane/LPG,

I started stock pileing it because I just won't give the power companies my money, and now they have ramped up the price I am in front when it comes to Cost per Hour run time,

I learned some valuable lessons about Solar too but thats another story.

The problem with that comparison is that the fuel efficiency of petrol vehicles is below 40%, so more than 60 litres of your 100 litres of petrol gets wasted on heat and smoke and noise! Electric vehicles don't waste energy like that, so their present battery sizes are actually pretty realistic.

Ouch! pricey, Come to sunny oz (perhaps to the hum of air conditioners, but not gas at least)

Yeah that's alright if you only want to travel 200ks.
100 liters = 1000ks. I'm with goldierocks i'll wait and see.

Yeah a sign of the times with all the greenie opposition to gas.
My old prospecting mate Clyde had his 55? Series Toyota converted to a Holden V8 and LPG.
He had a tap under the passenger seat where he could refill his caravan gas bottles. In those days I used to sit happily alongside Clyde with a fag in my hand not knowing what was beneath my bum.

Yep that would get the power cables glowing,

Yeah, a new coal fired power station.

There's still hope.;)
I find the press talks as if Australia is going to stop mining coal. About 70% of coal mined in Australia is exported, and demand overall for Australian coal is expected to grow at more than 1.4% per annum over the next 4 years or so.

If demand is therefore expected to grow not reduce, there will presumably be no major unemployment issue. Considering that coal-fired power stations are now twice as expensive as renewables like wind per KwH produced (and we are panicking about our soaring energy costs), I don't see that there is any great reason to push for new coal-fired power plants. More important to ensure that all closing power stations are replaced by SOMETHING (including things that can cope with peak demands).

Like so many things green so many issues are emotional with opinions formed without the facts being examined. We need more fact-based evaluation of our energy needs and projected coal demand.

Totally agree goldierocks.
Like you when i can drive an electric vehicle 1000ks and recharge it in 10 minutes i'll be in the market for one.
I can't see it happening.

It might - but I suspect I will not see it while still driving....

To me it just seems to be a step back in time with slower speeds if you want to extend ks travelled, fewer ks per charge compared to filling up with diesel and longer time to fill up.
Dare i say it, back to the horse & buggy days. That's just my view.
